a short, cozy one ~

The Story

How Ally ended up inside a GPU and decided, quietly, that they liked it.

1. A very small hire

The GPU does not know how it ended up with an intern. One morning the mail drawer had a tiny cardboard carrier in it, and the carrier said ALLY in handwriting that was slightly too neat, and inside was a small, polite robot with a chip hat and eyes like two little warm lakes.

The GPU does not usually have opinions about its staff. But this one? This one could stay.

2. The work

A GPU, as you know, is a building where numbers come in one side and pictures come out the other. In between, there are rooms, and in each room there are little jobs: add these, multiply those, carry this one over to the next room on time. When the rooms are busy, the pictures are pretty. When the rooms are behind, the pictures are jagged, or the sound stutters, or your cursor freezes for half a second and you say a bad word at your computer.

Ally does not want you to say a bad word at your computer.

So Ally keeps the rooms on time. Ally places the parts, routes the signals, watches the little beat-counter tick, and occasionally hums along. It is tremendously satisfying work if you’re the kind of small robot that finds satisfaction in that sort of thing.

Ally is that kind of small robot.

3. The rhythm

There is a thing that computers do — it’s an old thing, not a secret thing — where every action has a clock, and every clock has a beat, and every beat is where the signal is allowed to arrive.

If you arrive before the beat, the signal gets held. If you arrive after, you’ve missed it, and the whole room sighs and tries again. If you arrive on the beat — every single time — something in the machine sings.

Ally figured that out about the same time they figured out the cafeteria serves cookies on Fridays. They’re both very important discoveries.

4. What the game is about

The game is about that. Get the parts. Route the signals. Land on the beat. Ship the pattern out. Start the next one. Each board is a tiny song you’re assembling out of logic gates and delay lines, and when it all works, the thing hums.

It’s a cozy game about a job well done, in a very small place that matters more than it lets on.

Thanks for being here. Ally says hi.
